We instead employ a white, tooth-colored filling material known as "composite resin." The earlier metal fillings are not linked to the tooth in any way. To prevent the filling from falling out, it is packed into an undercut in the tooth structure. It clings to the tooth in the same way as a rock climber might squeeze himself between two vertical rock faces by pressing against the walls and burying fingers and toes into small gaps to hold on. The issue with metal fillings, which were once the conventional treatment for filling cavities, is that tooth cusps flex somewhat during eating, whereas metal filling material does not. This causes very small fractures that are difficult to spot and track, and the fractures eventually grow large enough for a portion of the tooth to fall off.
